Humanitarian mission log: Lori Cohen
- Education/Training
Given that the African continent has a very high percentage of eye disease ranging from infection to blindness, Furthermore, it also has the great problem of the incapacity and the lack of knowhow to deal with and treat such diseases.
PREPARATION WORK
In the Imo State – formerly Biafra - in Nigeria, S.O.Solidarietà Onlus, an international voluntary association that has been operating for years, has frequently received multiple requests for help for vision issues while holding clinics in rural areas and villages.
In the Imo State, the number of vision specialists is limited; There are very few ophthalmologists, a few optometrists. People, who are struggling with economic problems, most of the time cannot afford to visit opticians or even to pay for a pair of glasses.
In this context, S.O.Solidarietà aims to provide help that brings lasting improvements over time through the empowerment, awareness and emancipation of individuals at the service of their community.
PROJECT PROPOSAL
The opening of an optometric cabinet and an optical laboratory in the city of Owerri, the ethical management of which can be entrusted to a local optometrist, would bring great benefits to the entire population.
OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
Provide the necessary instruments for the measurement of vision and the supply of glasses, and the training of local technicians.
